From 2 to 5 December 2024, Marc Röggla and Jakob Volgger participated in the Villa Vigoni workshop “The digital transition for minority language media in Italy and Germany: a knowledge exchange with European partners“. Together with the European Centre of Minority Issues, the Center for Autonomy Experience in 2022 successfully applied to Villa Vigoni to host this workshop.
This event brought together 20 academics to discuss the pressing challenges of digitisation faced by minority language media (MLM) in Germany, Italy and their respective related minorities across Europe. At the same time, other minority situations in Europe were also discussed.
The programme opened with an overview of the current landscape of MLM in the digital age, including a presentation by Marc Röggla. In six thematic panels, participants discussed topics ranging from the role of social media as an alternative to traditional media to the identity of MLM journalists and youth media consumption trends.
The workshop concluded with a collaborative world café session to brainstorm policy recommendations to support the sustainability of MLM in the digital age. This event once again highlighted the challenges and opportunities of digitalisation for MLM.
