The 21st International Conference on Minority Languages (ICML) will take place from 22 to 26 June 2027 at Eurac Research in Bozen/Bolzano/Bulsan, Italy. This will be the first time the conference is held in South Tyrol.
The 2027 edition will be organised by three institutes of Eurac Research: the Center for Autonomy Experience, the Institute for Minority Rights and the Institute for Applied Linguistics.
Since its first edition in Glaschu/Glasgow in 1980, the ICML has become a leading international forum for researchers, policymakers and practitioners working on minority language issues. It provides a platform for interdisciplinary dialogue on topics related to minority languages, including linguistics, education, media and legislation.
On 26 June, the final day of ICML 2025 in Bogotá, the team from Eurac Research officially took over as hosts of the next conference. Marta Guarda (Institute for Applied Linguistics), Jakob Volgger (Center for Autonomy Experience) and Mattia Zeba (Institute for Minority Rights) briefly introduced the 2027 edition, highlighting South Tyrol’s multilingual experience as a lens for wider debate.
‘The International Conference on Minority Languages is a key meeting place for the academic community,’ they said. ‘We are honoured to host the next edition and to bring international attention to South Tyrol’s linguistic landscape and to Eurac Research’s work in the field of minority languages and minority protection.’
Rosa Angelica Ramirez Rodriguez from the Universidad Externado de Colombia presented them with a traditional bag from Colombia as a hand-over gift. She had introduced the ICML XX two years ago in Caerfyrddin/Carmarthen.
ICML 2027 will continue to address core themes of the conference series, while also opening up to current debates such as minority languages in the age of artificial intelligence and new technologies.
The official website, icml2027.eurac.edu, is now online. Further details on the call for papers, registration and programme will be announced in due course. The conference logo was also presented during the handover session in Bogotá.
